I had PRK done this past week. Here is how it went:
Day 1-Day of surgery- I started to get a little nervous once i got into the doctors office. I was talked through the surgery by a nurse and given a Valium to 'calm myself.' It did the reverse effect and made me a bit hyper. I started talking at super speed and Bre had to remind me to calm down. I got into the surgery room and they taped my right eye open and put the eye opener under my lids and told me to keep looking at the red light. I have news for you.. it gets really fuzzy and its actually orange! The worst part is when they are done and they clean out your eye with water and suction, not unlike the dentist. It was the weirdest feeling but if that's the worst them I'm ok with it. They did my left eye and then i was done. The whole thing took no more then half hour and as I walked out of the room I could see better then before! Bre and I went to fill my prescriptions and by the time we had gotten those i was ready to sleep. I ended up sleeping the rest of the day.
Day 2- Pretty much slept all day. I had a few books on tape on my ipod and ended up listening to an entire book today. I had a little bit of stinging and burning but it wasn't that bad. I had some loritab to take care of the pain and help me sleep better. I slept on and off but was able to get up and cook myself some lunch- grilled cheese and cookies. I had a friend come over to bring me dinner but i couldn't keep my eyes open to look at her. So i talked with my eyes closed in the dark with her. It wasn't too long before I was tired again and went back to sleep.
Day 3-I seriously slept for 18 hours today. I listened to another book on tape and didn't get out of bed. My eyes were a little more blurry then the prior days. I had expected that so it wasn't freaking me out but it is disturbing to go back to worse vision. I still had a hard time keeping my eyes open and was a little worried that i would always be so sensitive to light. Sleep really is the best way to heal your body so i just rested and slept.
Day 4-Today i woke up for the first time and wanted to stay awake and my eyes had a hard time shutting. I see blurry a bit still but its not too bad. The drops make it better for a while. I baked and cooked almost all day (that's what i do when I'm bored) and I also showered. It was a fantastic feeling to see my toes clearly and be able to see my legs when i shave them!! I also watched two movies and got a little tired from that. I needed a nap but was unable to take one so listening to another book on tape with my eyes closed was the best i got. I started blogging today as well. I think that tomorrow will be better then today. I don't have my follow up with the DR until Tuesday so the contacts will stay in till then. I think they are throwing off my vision a little bit too. Guess we'll wait it out. I have no problems looking at the computer and the TV has to be a bit closer then usual to see it clearly but all good :)
Day 5- Today was the first day i got a little bit scared about my eyesight. I had a really good day the day before but today wasn't getting any better then the day before. I was thinking that it would be more clear and clear each day but no progress scared me. It turned out to be fine.. I actually drove for the first time today and in the daylight it was fine. Used my sunglasses and I could see at least 5 feet ahead of me clearly but then things would get a bit fuzzy. I could see the lights but not read the signs as I was going along. I went to a movie and seeing it on such a big screen was great but still slightly fuzzy. Driving home in the dark was another story- it was super blurry (prob cause i strained my eyes a lot today and nighttime was going to be different). A friend brought me dinner and took me to FHE so i was doing better but I think I had pushed my eyes to far. Towards the end of the evening everything was getting fuzzier and I knew it was time for more drops and some sleep.
Day 6-Today was my first appt with the Dr after my surgery. I drove to some errands in the morning and was doing fine. I got to my eye appt and it lasted about 20 min.. pretty good! I went in and realized that things were going to be fuzzy for a while. The nurse said normally 2 1/2 weeks you notice things clearer and by the month mark its miraculously normal seeing without even realizing it. So i have hopes for the future. I realized that my right eye was seeing better then the left- which is somewhat normal since I have a astigmatism in my left eye. So after a week my right eye is 20/30 and my left eye is 20/50. Totally on the right path per the doc and my eyes looks good. I passed the driving test and have no more drops to do. It seems like all is going on schedule!
Days later- I have realized every day that my eyes stabilize a little more. I can see more clearly or I can see farther clearly. I don't have many problems driving, except at night. I can drive but i am getting the starburst vision with lights and am working through it. Its not enough to deter me from driving at night so i guess its not that bad. I can see the TV just fine these days and even reading is great. I don't have any pain and am still amazed at my little miracle.
I'll update this after I have another eye appt to see how my eyes have changed in another 2 weeks. Overall, I'm super happy that I did the surgery and am very confident in my Dr and this surgery. I am super blessed for my 2011 miracle !!!
